On 1 September 2026 in Wellington, under clear skies and a sense of calm, we witnessed MP Paulo Garcia deliver his valedictory speech — a moment filled with history, humility, and hope.

00:25 MP Paulo's Valedictory Speech
16:12 A snippet of "Paraiso" performed by the Auckland Choral Ensemble

As the first Filipino Member of Parliament in New Zealand, MP Paulo reflected on his journey: the privilege of representing our community, the realities and sacrifices of political life, and the deep gratitude he carries for this country we now call home. He reminded us that being migrants in Aotearoa is both a blessing and a responsibility — to appreciate the opportunities we’ve been given, to contribute with integrity, and to care for New Zealand as our shared home.

We sang “Paraiso,” a song of longing, hope, and the dream of a better world — a beautiful and fitting tribute to MP Paulo Garcia’s message. It was truly moving to witness the entire Parliament rise to their feet, dropping their differences aside for a moment, standing together in applause before giving MP Paulo their well wishes. An overwhelming moment of unity, gratitude, and pride for our Filipino community here in Aotearoa.

We also sang Bituing Walang Ningning, Rosas Pandan and Yanni’s Aria at the Parliament Banquet Hall afterwards.
